Barcelona: a free travel companion, and when to go and what flights really cost

A city break with a beach. About 2 hours flying from the UK, direct (typical).

Who it suits: Good for a city-and-beach break, architecture fans, food lovers and families. Late spring and early autumn are comfortable for sightseeing and the seafront; summer is hot and very busy.

These are suggestions, checked against official sources on 20 October 2026. Prices and opening times change, so check the official sites before you go. Hotels are separate, and a flight price is not the cost of a holiday.

Barcelona is Catalonia's capital, a seaside city with a medieval old town, long city beaches and the striking buildings of Antoni Gaudí. Its covered food markets and tapas bars are a big part of a visit.

A 3-day plan

A flexible outline: swap days around, and do less if you like. Many museums and markets close one day a week (often Sunday or Monday), so check the day you plan to go.

Day 1: Gaudí and the Eixample

Day 2: The old town and the market halls

Day 3: Park Güell, the beach and Montjuïc

Food and drink

Cheap
The city's covered markets, such as La Boqueria, Santa Caterina and Sant Antoni, sell fresh fruit, cheese, ham and ready-to-eat snacks. Bakeries and small bars do pa amb tomàquet and simple sandwiches.
Mid-range
Tapas bars let you share several small plates. Bars on La Rambla and right next to the big sights can be dearer than those a few streets away.
Treat
For a special meal, book ahead and check the menu and prices online first; set tasting menus can be expensive.
Dishes to try
Pa amb tomàquet (bread rubbed with tomato and olive oil), escalivada (grilled vegetables, good for vegetarians), esqueixada (salt cod salad), botifarra sausage, and crema catalana (a custard with a burnt sugar top). Calçots are a kind of onion, grilled and eaten at a feast called a calçotada.

Areas to explore

Gothic Quarter and El Born (Ciutat Vella)
The old town between La Rambla and the Ciutadella park: narrow streets, the Cathedral and markets. Very central but crowded and can be noisy at night.
Eixample
The grid of wide streets with Gaudí's houses and the Sagrada Família. Flatter, calmer, with good metro links.
Barceloneta
The old maritime neighbourhood beside the city beaches, with its own market. Busy in summer.
Gràcia
A district north of the Eixample with small squares and local shops, and the area where Park Güell is. A calmer alternative to the old town.
Poble-sec
At the foot of Montjuïc, with many tapas bars. A local feel, a short walk from the Magic Fountain.

From the airport

Aerobús
Express buses from Terminal 1 (A1) and Terminal 2 (A2) to Plaça de Catalunya in about 30 to 35 minutes, running 24 hours a day. A single is €7.75 and a return €13.30; children under 4 travel free. Buy online, at machines at the stops or on board. Normal metro tickets are not valid. Keep an eye on bags at the airport and on the way in (FCDO). (source for Aerobús (opens in a new tab))
R2 Nord train
Commuter trains leave from Terminal 2 about every 30 minutes and stop at Barcelona Sants, Passeig de Gràcia and El Clot-Aragó. From Terminal 1, first take the free airport shuttle bus to Terminal 2. The T-casual ten-journey ticket is valid on this train. The line can have works and replacement buses, so check Rodalies before you travel. (source for R2 Nord train (opens in a new tab))
Taxi
Taxi ranks are opposite the arrivals areas of Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. The only official Barcelona taxis are black and yellow. Fares are metered, with an airport supplement; the Metropolitan Taxi Institute (taxi.amb.cat) publishes the current fares. (source for Taxi (opens in a new tab))

Getting around

The old town and the Eixample are easy to walk, and the metro and buses cover the rest. A single ticket is €2.90 and the T-casual (ten journeys, one per person) is from €13 (TMB). The T-casual is not valid at the airport metro stations on line L9 Sud, which need a separate €5.90 airport ticket; the Hola Barcelona travel card does include the airport metro. You can buy a single bus ticket on board with your bank card. Watch for pickpockets, who often work in teams; real police never ask to see your wallet, and drinking in the street can bring an on-the-spot fine in some areas (FCDO).
